Why Use WordPress?
If you are planning to build a website or start a blog, I definitely recommend using WordPress for more than one reason! (here are just 5 of them).
1. WordPress is used for more than 20% of all websites online.
2. There are literally thousands of free plugins & themes to choose from.
3. WordPress itself is 100% free to use.
4. It is super easy to set-up, use and manage – See This Tutorial
5. WordPress is open source which means it's always getting better!
3 Simple Steps to Build an Awesome WordPress Website
Below you will find the 3 main steps of building a website using WordPress.
There are also a few other small bits and pieces to do, but you will see that building a website with WordPress isn’t as hard as you may have thought!
#1 Registering Web Hosting & A Domain Name
Web Hosting is basically a computer that is left on 24/7 with our WordPress website loaded onto it. This way people can gain access to it, even when our own computer is switched off.
Web Hosting normally costs around $8 a month, although I do have a coupon code which I give out in my tutorials that will get your first months hosting with them for 1 penny!
A Domain Name is the title of our website or blog, with WWW. before it, and .com after it. Domain Names will usually cost about $13 a year.
Worth Noting: These two things are required (Hosting & Domain) to run any website or blog (not only WordPress). They are the only two things that will cost any money, everything else can be got for free.
#2 Installing WordPress & Changing Our Theme
WordPress is a free and open source 'content management system' (CMS) which we will use to create our website. WordPress is used for more than 20% of all websites online (including this one), so you know they can definitely be trusted!
A WordPress Theme is basically what our website is going to look like. So for example, if you were a photographer and wanted to build a portfolio website to show off your photos. You would use a portfolio theme.
Same thing if you wanted to create a blog instead of a website, you would choose a blog style theme. They are almost like pre-made websites, only without the content.
#3 Creating & Arranging Our Content
I will show you how to create different types of pages for your site, this will include pages with text, images and embedded YouTube videos.
I also cover how to insert a Contact Form which allows users to send you an email by filling out a simple form rather than giving them your email address.
By arranging our content, I mean I will show you how to create custom Menus for your website and also cover how to change the “Sidebar” which is literally the bar that runs down the left or right hand-side of your website or blog.
After following the 3 main steps above we will have a fully functional WordPress website… it really is that easy!
