- WordPress is used for more than 20% of all websites online at the time of writing.
- There are literally Thousands of Free Themes to choose from.
- Celebrities such as Jay-Z and Katy Perry use WordPress for their official websites.
- WordPress is easy to set-up, use and manage – See This Tutorial.
- WordPress is open source which means there are always new people working on it, making it better every day!
3 Main Steps of Building A Website or Blog
Below you will find the 3 MAIN steps of building a website OR blog using WordPress. There are a few other bits and pieces to do as well but you will see that building websites and blogs using WordPress isn't as hard as you may have thought!
#1 Registering Web Hosting & A Domain Name
Web Hosting is basically a computer that is left on 24/7 with your website loaded onto it, this way people can gain access to your website or blog even when your computer is switched off. Web hosting normally costs around $8 a month, although I do have a coupon code I give out in my videos; which will get you your first months hosting for only 1 penny!
A domain name is the title of your website or blog with WWW. before it and .com after it (also known as your websites URL) and this will usually cost you around $13 a year.
Worth Noting: These two things are required (Hosting & Domain) to run any self hosted website or blog (this does not only apply to WordPress websites) and are the only two things that will cost you any money. I show you how to set both of these up with a company called HostGator.
#2 Installing WordPress & Our Theme
WordPress is a free and open source content management system (CMS) which we will use to create our websites. WordPress is used for more than 20% of all websites online at the time of writing this (including mine), so you know they can definitely be trusted!
A “WordPress Theme” is basically what your website is going to look like, so for example – if you were a photographer and wanted to build a portfolio website to show off your photos, you would use a portfolio theme. Same thing if you wanted to create a blog instead of a website, you would choose a blog style theme.
*The themes I use in my videos are usually free.
#3 Creating & Arranging Our Content
I will show you how to create different types of pages for your site, this will include pages with text, images and embedded YouTube videos. I also cover how to insert a “Contact Form” which allows users to send you an email by filling out a simple form rather than giving them your email address.
By arranging our content, I mean I will show you how to create custom Menus for your website and also cover how to change the “Sidebar” which is literally the bar that runs down the left or right hand-side of your website or blog (some themes allow you to have a sidebar on both sides).
