How to Link Pages in WordPress – Transcript
Hi guys, it’s Martie here from letsbuildwp.com and in this video we’re going to be covering how to create clickable links in WordPress.
So, to add a link in WordPress. We first need to visit the page or post we’re wanting to add our link to and then click “Edit” at the top, to open it up in the editor.
Now, we need to find the text that we’re wanting to turn into a link. Or, we can type some, if we haven’t already.
Then, we’re going to highlight the link text and click this little chain link icon that appears above it.
Now, we can either paste the URL we’re wanting to link to into this box. Or, if we’re linking to a page or post on our own domain name, we can just start typing the page name into this box.
Then, when it shows up, we can click on it to add the link.
And as we can see, when we add a link, it changes the color of the text in the editor.
Add External Links (Outbound Links)
Now, if we’re linking to another website, we’re going to want this link to open in a new tab.
To do this, we just need to click on the link and then turn on this switch, beside where it says “Open in new tab”.
Now, we just need to update our page or post. And now, when we visit it and click on our link. We’ll see that it now links to whatever URL we used.
And as we can see, mine has opened in a new tab, as I had that switch turned on. But, if you left it OFF, yours will open in the same tab.

How to Add Links on WordPress
(Internal Links)
Linking pages in WordPress is easy.
First, we just need to open up the page/post editor.
And find the text we’re wanting to turn into a link.
(or type something new).
Then, we’re going to highlight this text with our mouse.
And click the chain link icon that appears above it.
(see image below)
If we’re linking to a page or post on the same website (URL).
We have 2 different options:
Option #1 – Search for Page
We can simply start typing the page/post name we’re wanting to link to, into this popup box.
Then, when it shows up in the list.
We can click on the page to add the link.
Option #2 – Paste in URL
We can copy the URL for a specific page/post on our site.
And paste it into this box.
Then, we just need to click the enter icon to the right, to add the link.
At this point, we’ll see that the text changes colour.
(this means the link has been added)
Now, we just need to update/publish our page.
And the link will have been successfully added to our page.
Worth Noting: When we link to a page or post on the same website (URL), this is known as an “internal link” or “inbound link”.
How to Add Outbound Links in WordPress
(External Websites)
If we’re linking to something on a different website (URL), we’re going to want our link to open in a new tab.
This way, our website will still be left open in the background.
A link that opens in a new tab, is known as an “outbound link” or “external link”.
To create an outbound link on WordPress, we first need to open up the post editor.
And find the text we’re wanting to use for our link (or type some).
Next, we need to open up a new tab in our internet browser.
And visit the URL we’re wanting to link to.
Then, we’re going to right click and copy the URL at the top of the page.
Once we have the URL copied, we can close the new tab again.
Now, in the post editor, we need to highlight the text we want to turn into a link.
And click the chain link icon that appears above it.
Next, we’re going to paste the URL we copied, into this popup box.
And then, click the enter icon on the right, to add the link.
This will add the link to our page:
Now, we’re going to click on the link we just created.
And turn on the switch labelled: Open in new tab.
(this will turn it into an outbound/external link)
Finally, we just need to update/publish our page.
And the link we just created, will open in a new tab.
So, that’s us at the end, and that was how to add links on WordPress.
